About Me

My photo
Ellen McCormick Martens
Houston, Texas, United States
I decided to be an artist at age 12. I grew up in Green Bay, Wisconsin; my mother was highly creative but mentally ill. I married just after high school, had three children, then got divorced and gave my husband custody of our children, which is still a painful memory. I then lived in Eugene and Portland, Oregon, New York City, and finally moved to Houston in 1984. I remarried and we ended up moving to Wisconsin and then to the Buffalo New York area, before coming back to Houston. It was in my native state of Wisconsin that I began to paint full-time. My work has had many different styles, from bright, flat landscapes to beaded collage portraits of myself and my family, to geometric zodiac paintings, and on to the abstract work I am currently pursuing. I hope that my spirit comes through my work. I believe that each human being is immortal, incarnated many times, and that we keep learning and perfecting ourselves.
