Its size and the bold colors give a sense of playful intimacy. Traditional pigments were made from finely crushed rocks, combined with a medium such as oil, acrylic medium, and in the case of both watercolor and gouache, gum arabic. The modern or organic pigments were developed in chemistry labs. The organic pigments tend to be brighter and more transparent than the traditional inorganic pigments, and they retain their color even when mixed with each other, white or black. The pigments used in these sketches are: Naphthol Red Light, Quinacridone Magenta, Hansa Yellow Light, Benzimidazalone Yellow Light, Azo Yellow Medium, Anthraquinone Blue, Phthalo Blue Green Shade, and Phthalo Green Blue Shade.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">In the following sketches I used only modern pigments. I added a little of the main background color to each of the other 6 colors, to get them to harmonize. I did not use a lot of white, so these are very intense. I will do this kind of sketch with the other 4 pigments as well. In the red sketch, I used Hansa or Lemon Yellow, which is not very lightfast. In the other two sketches, I used Benzimidazalone Yellow, which is the recommended choice for a green-leaning yellow pigment that is lightfast.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyqHZ9weAsDgoovQdR7Oc4FfUzvqWhTmdZGqLwbZryJ5gPhRUCPjMYIk4n1C35IMTNvJErg_9lVCrw6zVZhPzWbPUmRQO7GLcG-okWSIVX0P1rcDOUG1fU49-5TN3tIGQrJgF0F_gZRcB8i6Qy0lHNQ4KMYQoTvKUIlZqCPvTn3-3QY9VOI6yktA/s2076/red%20modern%20pigment%20sketch.jpg" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2076" data-original-width="1480" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyqHZ9weAsDgoovQdR7Oc4FfUzvqWhTmdZGqLwbZryJ5gPhRUCPjMYIk4n1C35IMTNvJErg_9lVCrw6zVZhPzWbPUmRQO7GLcG-okWSIVX0P1rcDOUG1fU49-5TN3tIGQrJgF0F_gZRcB8i6Qy0lHNQ4KMYQoTvKUIlZqCPvTn3-3QY9VOI6yktA/w456-h640/red%20modern%20pigment%20sketch.jpg" width="456" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Naphthol red mixed with the rest<br /><br /></td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBUuJOuJVhd7q9FK59-d_yCjqYgdDabKwwvnuTu5tSCAQIAoH3d_E33u73GRZtmxGbn9qa-SoSRhNQ1mfEdQKpIxKHZN61CdrH1inbyHK7Vh1bdaIhtJMMdNy444YgSP70UDKuj8UDAon7nYjcpiSFehe4LxYlHjheVdo7rF0uoHSdS3ROBiEutQ/s1080/yellow%20sketch%20color.jpg" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="688" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBUuJOuJVhd7q9FK59-d_yCjqYgdDabKwwvnuTu5tSCAQIAoH3d_E33u73GRZtmxGbn9qa-SoSRhNQ1mfEdQKpIxKHZN61CdrH1inbyHK7Vh1bdaIhtJMMdNy444YgSP70UDKuj8UDAon7nYjcpiSFehe4LxYlHjheVdo7rF0uoHSdS3ROBiEutQ/w408-h640/yellow%20sketch%20color.jpg" width="408" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Benzimidazalone yellow mixed with the other pigments<br /><br /></td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsR0N4_iakNdoJNV_CMF0OFV3lB_gk-6Fxnodej-H-RYg_ztX4fUSaTXeah640q8MqllWnu0pPfoUAUxgTKCcjRzrkuWWo8KrQixdvJ1-Xn_ltwpYZy3tVvPQs_fJw70jig96FQMnSg70kUcv2Vc9fbNfaGv1zzJdtHQh1MRnTNSJg9Daerfd1mA/s2864/blue%20modern%20pigment%20sketch.jpg" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2864" data-original-width="1908" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsR0N4_iakNdoJNV_CMF0OFV3lB_gk-6Fxnodej-H-RYg_ztX4fUSaTXeah640q8MqllWnu0pPfoUAUxgTKCcjRzrkuWWo8KrQixdvJ1-Xn_ltwpYZy3tVvPQs_fJw70jig96FQMnSg70kUcv2Vc9fbNfaGv1zzJdtHQh1MRnTNSJg9Daerfd1mA/w426-h640/blue%20modern%20pigment%20sketch.jpg" width="426" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Anthraquinone blue mixed with the other pigments</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><br /> <p></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p>Ellen McCormick Martenshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13038378496712513630noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23638197.post-420974601128962532024-02-11T21:08:00.002-06:002024-02-11T21:08:40.029-06:00New Collage Sketchbook<p> This is the cover of the newest collage sketchbook, made from one 22x30" sheet of watercolor paper, folded, cut and glued to make a thick-paged booklet. I was looking into astrological transits for that day, and the Sun happened to be at 3° Virgo, (rounding up). I looked up the degree in Dane Rudhyar's book An Astrological Mandala, and the keywords were STRENGTH WITHIN, so I made that the title of the sketch. I had done a sketch the day before, and I titled it LIBERATING ORDEAL, and the sketch today is named BROTHERHOOD. I am not very good at consistency, but if I can keep it going, I will use the keywords for each degree until this time next year, as titles for my daily sketches.</p><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzogrniAonhUNdjVXYKUIBEh4R5qVVD9sztwm4MDr_dM6gDjbmQIzcdZDVQSNNaLQDtg8G4Ob2CrTT0XqAjnhEdHBju7xc2HOZwYnVOk9-kfUxTX_OZDKUWxAUQnTrke4uIrfF8mPSxiSpztvqwY58STulUxbQO4yIikj2NkpvSQ5oVBMxhVDkKw/s2664/Splash.jpg" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2664" data-original-width="1984" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzogrniAonhUNdjVXYKUIBEh4R5qVVD9sztwm4MDr_dM6gDjbmQIzcdZDVQSNNaLQDtg8G4Ob2CrTT0XqAjnhEdHBju7xc2HOZwYnVOk9-kfUxTX_OZDKUWxAUQnTrke4uIrfF8mPSxiSpztvqwY58STulUxbQO4yIikj2NkpvSQ5oVBMxhVDkKw/w477-h640/Splash.jpg" width="477" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">"Liberating Ordeal"<br /><br /></td></tr></tbody></table><br /><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpMFBvEoEWHAIurXVB7Hsn0s_0ERWCui1UY8o4zWU0uqjDLcsPi0ukCgkyICkOcRosQHExhuFQzVZGdblJFqgsBTEIKn8-JcMnulUHZUx_UVtl1uz8bgCseL9Tta1MXUiblXEvoQXR_odffvSt2yECs3aAeESfUB4g54uD7wu9KiaL4o8qAJsPUw/s3030/8-25-23%20Sketch.jpg" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3030" data-original-width="2294" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpMFBvEoEWHAIurXVB7Hsn0s_0ERWCui1UY8o4zWU0uqjDLcsPi0ukCgkyICkOcRosQHExhuFQzVZGdblJFqgsBTEIKn8-JcMnulUHZUx_UVtl1uz8bgCseL9Tta1MXUiblXEvoQXR_odffvSt2yECs3aAeESfUB4g54uD7wu9KiaL4o8qAJsPUw/w485-h640/8-25-23%20Sketch.jpg" width="485" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">"Strength Within"<br /><br /></td></tr></tbody></table><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnz64syGOaDh4VShb9gb6tNtgeffnJoe9djnvQJHa2hlwxTYHPVhZOyWW0bYf892zfJHnm-t3wxgw5KalojfysnlWDBIyy0x8_EheuHdI_-aX7YA8gTADtmnxOu8MkAtnCt9V2O-IfMMOEKxXXCfFho3tAFLasGORkm57Y5eiXvJqRqBrV5RYyNQ/s2892/Brotherhood.jpg" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2892" data-original-width="2211" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnz64syGOaDh4VShb9gb6tNtgeffnJoe9djnvQJHa2hlwxTYHPVhZOyWW0bYf892zfJHnm-t3wxgw5KalojfysnlWDBIyy0x8_EheuHdI_-aX7YA8gTADtmnxOu8MkAtnCt9V2O-IfMMOEKxXXCfFho3tAFLasGORkm57Y5eiXvJqRqBrV5RYyNQ/w490-h640/Brotherhood.jpg" width="490" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">"Brotherhood"</td></tr></tbody></table><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><br /><p><br /></p>Ellen McCormick Martenshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13038378496712513630noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23638197.post-4718348859844597592023-08-09T16:43:00.002-05:002023-08-09T16:43:08.970-05:00"Cheer I and II"<p>These two were somewhat static until I decided to attack with drippy paint. It seemed to lack cohesion. So this week, I covered the entire surface with a blue-violet glaze. It was overwhelming, but then I wiped it back, sanded it, and finally wiped it with isopropyl alcohol on cheesecloth. The colors still show through but they are much more subtle. It seemed to call for a focal point, or some contrast. I happened upon a light tan painted tissue in my stash, which had other colors of paint in places, and the ragged edge of brush strokes where the transparent tissue disappears (when glued down with acrylic medium). I tore it into various sizes of pieces and applied it, and the whole painting came to life for me. The 2020 version is mostly yellow, and the new one is mostly violet. "Redux" means brought back, or revived, which is definitely true in this case. It is still a work in progress, though.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjphMtfn36iz-1eSbfrY9z8w2DdrQrHEz7_W2_VJPIdbCA_lhHfFDZRqxLJxFrf4CtnHgRleNwJ7NldoUtVAq2QQhEt7cZ0VmAZogbtFJC1MzdvsOqWzxFeU4QClvVCJIdOhM3ruWFviPVddHpcglLCOt85u6-H7CA2nErCuVH-2RA5SYvaB1yE1w/s1080/Unified%20Field%20July%202023.jpg" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1080" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjphMtfn36iz-1eSbfrY9z8w2DdrQrHEz7_W2_VJPIdbCA_lhHfFDZRqxLJxFrf4CtnHgRleNwJ7NldoUtVAq2QQhEt7cZ0VmAZogbtFJC1MzdvsOqWzxFeU4QClvVCJIdOhM3ruWFviPVddHpcglLCOt85u6-H7CA2nErCuVH-2RA5SYvaB1yE1w/w640-h640/Unified%20Field%20July%202023.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Unified Field Redux</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSgAFoisAlhGGEKyhZ-8TsEN82Ny1nyIz0HcGlhaaO-XtksyYeg3bQB6KQcll__Gxc-t1163gMOYLb0mlFu9NTj1wU4TFEvZOPY64VyqGfvbYJeb37F1uvPyU7iTTmA9BVvADnEzjPFdZCcBSOa1faZ-VgOVuzfPCDuknjuBPN2mgXjUz1PPrzOg/s1600/Unified%20Field.jpeg" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1598" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSgAFoisAlhGGEKyhZ-8TsEN82Ny1nyIz0HcGlhaaO-XtksyYeg3bQB6KQcll__Gxc-t1163gMOYLb0mlFu9NTj1wU4TFEvZOPY64VyqGfvbYJeb37F1uvPyU7iTTmA9BVvADnEzjPFdZCcBSOa1faZ-VgOVuzfPCDuknjuBPN2mgXjUz1PPrzOg/w640-h640/Unified%20Field.jpeg" width="640" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Unified Field (2020)</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /> <p></p>Ellen McCormick Martenshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13038378496712513630noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23638197.post-16858189830850228332023-07-23T08:16:00.003-05:002023-07-23T08:16:32.949-05:00"Birds, Maybe?"<p>"Birds, Maybe?" 14x14x1.5", acrylic on cradled wood panel. I disliked these two as collages, so I covered the entire surface with red paint, then applied masks in shapes and went over the whole surface again, with dark blue-green. They sat in my studio for a long time, until the other day, when I sanded them, and painted a neutral color between the shapes and collages. It seemed to be too much, so I wiped off the paint, but some of it came off more than other areas, and I got these intriguing shapes in dark grey-ish blue-green.
