Celebration Boogie
Fooling around in my sketchbook again. I taped off these areas and used a limited palette of red-orange, orange, and blue green with china marker, white paint stencil, and tissue paper transparencies.

Genie
I am working with an 8"x5" watercolor sketchbook now, because the notebook that was recommended does not work well for me. Maybe for some other form of art, but for my paper collages it is just not heavy enough.

Mountain Road Collage (after Andre Derain)
This 9"x12" collage is pinned up on my studio wall, so you can make out the edges of the clear push pins if you look closely. I enjoyed putting this together and I see how the dark lines accentuate the bright colors, and the composition is delightful.
Here is the reproduction of Derain's painting (also seen in an earlier post):

More Tiny. Journal Pages
For some reason, I stopped adding the black marks to some of these spreads. I think they look better without it. I don't know if that is a permanent change or not.

Wonder
Once again, I based the colors in a collage on a painting from the Fauves era. This one is by Braque, called "Paysage a la Ciotat" or Landscape at Ciotat. The shapes feel like they are bouncing around and excited about something, in awe and wonder. This spread is in the 8"x5" notebook.
Mail Carrier on Horseback
This collage is based upon a recent dream, in which I was buying a cabin in the woods, and the mail carrier arrived on horseback to deliver a postcard on a piece of bark.
Glittery Grunge
I put in the backgrounds from gel printing papers I had on hand, and yesterday I put shapes onto them. It is a bit raggedy but it gives me pleasure to look at it.

More Zing!
This green spread was fairly restrained, so I added the red-orange collage materials, plus the stamp and magazine photo to give it a bit of a boost.
Teensy-Weensy Collage Journal

I am having a lot of fun doing these spreads. I begin with a small cut-out portion of a gel print I have made. Then I collage another piece of a gel print in a shape, usually in a complementary color. Finally I collage in some black marks that are painted on tissue paper transparency sheets. Very enjoyable! I use these sketchbooks for developing ideas, trying out techniques, and just keeping my studio practice consistent. I used the little clamps to keep the pages open and flat.
New Journal
This journal is 8" x 5" and I am working in it using glue sticks and acrylic medium only on the side that is being glued down. I am hopeful this will reduce the sticky factor.
Sketchbook completed?
It is hard to say if this sketchbook is finished. I keep doing things and then thinking Ooh that might look good on other pages. I think the next sketchbook I will work on only one page, instead of in spreads, because that way I will have to contend with less stickiness. Now both sides are sticky, and they want to glue themselves together.

L'Estaque Collage
This piece is 9"x12" collage, from Georges Braque, L'Estaque, 1906. I am working on doing abstract landscape, using collage.
Reproduction of Braque's painting from a book on Fauvism.

Freshening Up
These two were early attempts at painting in combination with collage in this sketchbook, and I was not pleased with the results. Today I added deli paper with painted circles in black fluid acrylic, and I think it improved them both considerably.
Updated Brownie
This page was a little blah so I added some black marks. I made the marks on artist's tissue that was coated thinly with gloss medium.

Blue-Green and Brown-Ochre
This sketchbook constantly evolves; it is very exciting for me. On the left I had the greenish pattern, and on the right the yellow and tan swirls. I forgot to let them both dry enough and they stuck together. Because of that I put more collage items on top of what I had. I like them both even better now. One of those happy accidents, I guess.

Value Check
I worked on this collage today to change the values. I darkened the blue-violet areas, added some lighter green pieces in the green on the right side, and added some golden brown to make the bright yellow pieces less uniformly rectangular. I made a duplicate in my phone using snapseed, and made it black and white to ascertain what the range of values is. The brown of the logs is too close in value to the golden brown of the rocks, so I will carefully darken them (I think).
